Why Experience Is More Important Than a College Degree

If you do not have a college degree and are really
hung up on this qualification, remember this:
A person of experience will never be at the mercy
of a person with book learning. All of the degrees
in the world might not help a person when he or
she gets to the job site.

I have done many resumes for $100,000 a year
managers who lack a college degree but have
dozens of employees with bachelor and master's
degrees working for them.

They were the boss--not because they had a
degree--but because they knew how and what
to do when it counted. Experience can matter.

One such manager without a college degree,
when asked why he was the boss and had many
college graduates taking orders from him, said
simply:

"Mostly, it's just common sense. When I leave the
office at night, I make sure the lights are out and
the doors locked. Sometimes folks with degrees
are absorbed in their own knowledge and not really
paying attention to what's going on around them,
and how they fit into the total picture."

A degree says you have the potential to do it
(complete a task at the job site); experience says
you have already done it.
